Barnett Newman was an American artist known for his unique abstract expressionism style. He rose to fame in the late 1940s and 1950s. Newman became famous for his large-scale canvases featuring vertical bands or 'zips' of color that he called 'Stations of the Cross' or 'The Sign'.
